Should I give a support agent my SMS verification code?
No. The code confirms phone-number registration. A support agent, group owner, installer, or remote helper does not need it. Stop if anyone requests the code, screen sharing, or an unexpected re-registration.
How is a Signal PIN different from an SMS code?
The SMS code belongs to number registration. A Signal PIN can help recover profile data, settings, contacts, and the block list and can support registration lock. It is not a chat backup password, device passcode, or backup recovery key.
Will every chat return automatically on a new phone?
No. Using the same number or PIN does not restore all history. Secure Backups, on-device backups, and direct transfers have different platform and setup requirements. Keep the old device until the new one is verified.
Can a Secure Backup recovery key be recovered?
Do not expect the service to recover it. The end-to-end encrypted archive requires the correct recovery key for decryption. Store it offline where only you can access it, never in chat or an untrusted cloud folder.
Do usernames remove the need for a phone number?
No. Usernames can start a conversation without directly revealing a number, but account registration still needs one. Number visibility and discovery by number are separate privacy settings.
Can disappearing messages prevent screenshots?
No. They reduce message retention after a timer expires; they do not defeat a hostile recipient. Content can still be copied, forwarded, photographed, or captured.
What can groups and group calls do?
Groups support invite links, QR codes, mentions, descriptions, join approval, and administrator controls. Current public guidance lists up to 1,000 group members and up to 75 participants in a group video call; these figures may change.
Does a changed safety number always mean an attack?
No. Device replacement, reinstallation, or re-registration can cause a change, although frequent or unexpected changes deserve verification through another trusted channel.
